Why the generator gives you two lines
The goodbye is only half the awkward bit. The second line is for the common moment when someone asks you to stay. Deciding both in advance reduces the temptation to improvise a long excuse or quietly abandon the leave time you chose.
Use an honest reason or no reason
A polite exit does not require a fictional emergency. An early start, transport deadline, commitment tomorrow or planned stopping point is enough when it is true. You can also simply say that you are heading home. The generator keeps the reason short so the other person does not feel asked to fix it.
Make the exit easier before you speak
- Check the journey. Book or confirm transport before beginning the goodbye.
- Collect what you brought. Get your coat, bag and keys so your body matches the words.
- Thank the right person. At a hosted event, say goodbye to the host when practical.
- Keep the sentence final. “I'm heading home” is clearer than “I might go soon”.
- Repeat once. If someone pressures you, use the second line and continue leaving.
